Croatia celebrates its EU membership

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) ? Fireworks are ready and foreign leaders are arriving as Croatia celebrated on Sunday its entry into the European Union some 20 years after winning independence in a bloody civil war that shook the continent.

Croatia will become the 28th EU member on Monday, the bloc's first addition since Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007. Croatia's membership marks a historic turning point for the small country, which went through carnage after declaring independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991.

A decade back, when Croatia started negotiating the entry, the once war-torn country was overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a member of the European elite. But with the EU in deep financial turmoil and Croatia's own economy in recession for five consecutive years, the excitement has dimmed.

Thousands of people are expected to join in the celebrations across the country, including in the main square of the capital, Zagreb, where artists will perform for dozens of EU and regional leaders until midnight when big fireworks and the singing of Beethoven's Ode to Joy ? EU's anthem ? will mark the official entry into the bloc.

Customs posts will be removed from Croatia's borders with EU neighbors Slovenia and Hungary, while EU signs and flags will be put on its borders with non-EU states Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro.

But overall, the festivities will be much more modest and less jubilant than when Bulgaria and Romania ? currently EU's poorest states ? became members. With the entry, Croatia ? a nation of 4.2 million people ? will become the third poorest country in the EU.

"There are not too many festivities because the general situation is not brilliant," Croatian President Ivo Josipovic told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "We have to develop our economy, take care of those people who are jobless now, and there is no time and money for big celebrations."

With an unemployment rate hovering at around 20 percent, plunging living standards, endemic corruption among its political elite and its international credit rating reduced to junk, many Croats are not in the mood to celebrate.

Some economists have warned that Croatia could seek an EU financial bailout as soon as it becomes a member. But Croatia's Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic rejected those claims, saying that the country would qualify for bailouts only if it is a member of the eurozone, a separate 17-country group that uses the EU's common currency, the euro.

"Croatia, and Croatia is not a member of the eurozone, and will not become a member of the eurozone until all the conditions are met."

President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz called Croatia's accession a "historic day."

"EU membership will offer no magic solution to the crisis," he said in a statement. "But it will help to lift many people out of poverty and modernize the economy. "

Protest movement Occupy Croatia is planning an anti-EU march Sunday evening, saying in a statement that "the European Union is not a solution to our problems."

"The entry into the European Union is an economic genocide over the people living in our country," the group said in a statement, blasting the EU as a "union tailored for rich corporations and their politicians."

The EU is in the grips of a recession, with many countries struggling to stimulate growth while grappling with a debt crisis that has led governments to slash spending and raise taxes. The EU countries account for 60 percent for Croatia's exports, which has sent the Balkan country's economy into a steady decline.

"It's important that we remember that Croatia is joining at the strangest time for the European Union in history," said Paul Stubbs, a senior research fellow at the Institute of Economics in Zagreb. He said Croatians "might see some increased prices, some increased competition, I wouldn't expect some huge increase in investment overnight."

But, the pro-EU voices in Croatia note that joining the bloc means Croatians could find jobs in more prosperous EU countries, that their country could attract more foreign investment, and that the EU's leadership in Brussels could help keep widespread corruption and economic mismanagement in check.

"We really had no choice," said Nino Vidic, a Zagreb resident. "Croatia is a small country, and logically as a Catholic country, we strive toward the West."

As 10,000 watch, opera giants battle to draw

MUNICH, Germany (AP) ? It's a question that has long prompted heated arguments among devoted opera fans: Who was the greater composer, Richard Wagner or Giuseppe Verdi?

Both were born exactly 200 years ago, and so in this year of their bicentennials, the Bavarian State Opera decided to settle the question once and for all. Sort of.

Even though the two men never met in real life, they came face to face on Friday night in the form of giant puppets wearing boxing gloves, cheered on by a crowd estimated by police at nearly 10,000 spectators in Max Joseph Platz next to the National Theater.

The puppets ? Verdi in top hat and Wagner wearing a beret ? were the centerpieces of an extravaganza featuring more than three dozen aerial acrobats, fireworks, a chorus line and two wind orchestras and two brass bands totaling about 240 musicians.

The show was one of a series of free events being organized in the square as part of the annual Munich Opera Festival, which runs to the end of July. It was staged by La Fura dels Baus, a maverick theatrical troupe from Barcelona that has also created opera productions for the company.

After introductory music by local composer Moritz Eggert, the puppets, who had marched through town followed by crowds of admirers, launched into a heated debate over who was superior. Wagner claimed the intellectual advantage, while Verdi insisted that people responded more to the emotion in his melodies.

The hour-long performance then became a back-and-forth contest of greatest hits, the puppets all the while changing colors from purple to red to green to yellow. At one point, the "Entrance of the Guests" from Wagner's "Tannhaeuser" was rudely interrupted by the "Triumphal March" from "Aida." And Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" was similarly obliterated by the "Dies Irae" from Verdi's "Requiem."

During the "Wedding March" from "Lohengrin," Wagner sprouted a bridal veil and a bouquet of flowers. When the band played "Va Pensiero," the famous chorus of Hebrew slaves from Verdi's "Nabucco," many in the crowd sang along to words flashed on a giant screen.

At the end, the voice of Euterpe, muse of musical art and poetry, announced that the contest was a tie and proposed transplanting Verdi's heart into Wagner and Wagner's brain into Verdi. Perhaps disappointingly, the two puppets never came to actual blows.

Phoenix, Las Vegas bake in scorching heat

PHOENIX (AP) ? A blazing heat wave expected to send the mercury soaring to nearly 120 degrees in Phoenix and Las Vegas over the weekend has settled across the West, threatening to ground airliners and forcing cities to set up cooling stations for the homeless and elderly.

The heat was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Zookeepers in Phoenix hosed down the elephants and fed tigers frozen fish snacks. And tourists at California's Death Valley took photos of the harsh landscape and a thermometer that read 121.

The mercury there was expected to reach nearly 130 through the weekend ? just short of the 134-degree reading from a century ago that stands as the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

"You have to take a picture of something like this. Otherwise no one will believe you," said Laura McAlpine, visiting Death Valley from Scotland on Friday.

The heat is not expected to break until Monday or Tuesday.

The scorching weather presented problems for airlines because high temperatures can make it more difficult for planes to take off. Hot air reduces lift and also can diminish engine performance. Planes taking off in the heat may need longer runways or may have to shed weight by carrying less fuel or cargo.

Smaller jets and propeller planes are more likely to be affected than bigger airliners that are better equipped for extreme temperatures.

The National Weather Service said Phoenix reached 116 on Friday, two degrees short of the expected high, in part because of a light layer of smoke from wildfires in neighboring New Mexico that shielded the blazing sun. Las Vegas still was expecting near record highs over the weekend approaching 116 degrees while Phoenix was forecast to hit nearly 120. The record in Phoenix is 122.

Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho, with triple-digit heat forecast for the Boise area. Cities in Washington state that are better known for cool, rainy weather should break the 90s next week.

"This is the hottest time of the year, but the temperatures that we'll be looking at for Friday through Sunday, they'll be toward the top," said National Weather Service meteorologist Mark O'Malley. "It's going to be baking hot across much of the entire West."

The heat is the result of a high-pressure system brought on by a shift in the jet stream, the high-altitude air current that dictates weather patterns. The jet stream has been more erratic in the past few years.

Health officials warned people to be extremely careful when venturing outdoors. The risks include not only dehydration and heat stroke but burns from the concrete and asphalt.

"You will see people who go out walking with their dog at noon or in the middle of the day and don't bring enough water and it gets tragic pretty quickly," said Bretta Nelson, spokeswoman for the Arizona Humane Society. "You just don't want to find out the hard way."

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless as well as elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners. In Phoenix, Joe Arpaio, the famously hard-nosed sheriff who runs a tent jail, planned to distribute ice cream and cold towels to inmates this weekend.

Officials said personnel were added to the Border Patrol search-and-rescue unit because of the danger to people trying to slip across the Mexican border. At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona after falling victim to the brutal desert heat.

In June 1990, when Phoenix hit 122 degrees, airlines were forced to cease flights for several hours because of a lack of data from the manufacturers on how the aircraft would operate in such extreme heat.

US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher said the airline now knows that its Boeings can fly at up to 126 degrees, and its Airbus fleet can operate at up to 127.

While the heat in Las Vegas is expected to peak on Sunday, it's unlikely to sideline the first round of the four-week Bikini Invitational tournament.

"I feel sorry for those poor girls having to strut themselves in 115 degrees, but there's $100,000 up for grabs," said Hard Rock casino spokeswoman Abigail Miller. "I think the girls are willing to make the sacrifice."

'Heat' breaks barriers as female buddy-cop film

Movies

You have seen movies like ?The Heat.? But you?ve never seen a movie quite like ?The Heat.?

IMAGE: The Heat

Gemma La Mana / AP

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy star in "The Heat," which is perhaps the first-ever buddy cop movie starring two women.

The buddy cop comedy, opening Friday and starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, features a familiar plot, but a new twist. The buddies are both women.

These are not women who brunch and talk about their guy troubles or dream of getting married, or are planning pregnancy. These are tough single women who live for their law enforcement jobs and curse. Well, one does. McCarthy?s Det. Mullins is vulgar and wild and relishes making others uncomfortable. Bullock?s FBI Agent Ashburn is arrogant, uptight and doesn?t have much of a sense of humor. If they remind you of the guys in ?Lethal Weapon? or ?48 Hours,? you?re not alone.

?It?s just a fun comedy that you can swap two men for the women, and in that way it?s remarkable,? said Yael Kohen, author of ?We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy.? ?It really is a very risky movie and exciting in a way. It?s not high-brow like ?Bridesmaids,? which also had an undercurrent of how women behave and relate. This movie doesn?t have any of that.?

When ?Bridesmaids? became a box-office smash in 2011, earning $300 million worldwide, critics declared it the beginning of a new era for women in leading roles. But two years later, most of the comedic roles for women are still of the romantic variety, with a sweet actress paired up with a leading man. ?The Heat,? which was directed by "Bridesmaids" Paul Feig, has now inherited the pressure. Even before the film hit theaters, screenwriter Katie Dippold (?Parks and Recreation?) was put to work on a sequel.

?At the end of the day, it?s a money question,? Kohen said. ?If ?The Heat,? does well, you?re more likely to see more (female buddie comedies) and you?re more likely to see the sequel.?

Comedies with two leading ladies were more popular in the 1980s than they are now, Kohen points out. Bette Midler starred in ?Outrageous Fortune" with Shelley Long in 1987 and in ?Big Business? with Lily Tomlin in 1988. That same year, Rebecca De Mornay and Mary Gross starred in what could have gone down in history as the first female buddy comedy but ?Feds? was a flop so no one remembers it. ?Thelma and Louise? in 1991 broke ground for women in film and had comedic elements though it was essentially a drama.

But, recently, Hollywood has been more apt to pair someone like Kate Hudson with Gael Garcia Bernal than with a female protagonist. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler stood out in 2008 when they starred in ?Baby Mama,? which won its opening weekend and grossed $60 million worldwide. But there hasn?t been a lead comedy female duo since.

?Hollywood thinks that men aren?t going to be interested in seeing the two women on the big screen,? Kohen said. ?They always want a leading man to help the woman open a movie. If ?The Heat,? doesn?t do well, I don?t think it?s necessarily that two women can?t open a movie. It could just be that people are not interested in that particular movie. But we know that?s not how it?s going to be viewed.?

"Heat" screenwriter Dippold, 33, told Kohen in an interview in Marie Claire that she wasn?t thinking about gender barriers or Hollywood tropes when she wrote the script. Growing up, she loved ?Running Scared? and ?Lethal Weapon,? and says, ?I always felt like those guys, the buddy cops, were so cool and badass and funny, and I always wanted to see two women like that.?

In that same vein, Bullock told Marie Claire that she was attracted to the script because Dippold did not restrict her character?s behavior according to gender expectations. "Katie wrote a story that required two human beings to be uncensored and not mind looking like idiots, something both women and men do on a daily basis,? Bullock said.

Bullock must have really liked what she read. Both she and McCarthy signed on to star in the movie just 10 days after Chernin Entertainment bought the script for $600,000. The movie is opening at record speed, only 20 months after Dippold completed the script. But even with such positive buzz, there?s still plenty of doubt among studio executives about whether two women can open an action buddy comedy, Kohen said.

?It?s hard enough to prove that one woman can open a movie let alone a duo,? Kohen said. ?It?s very ballsy for a movie to do and for a studio to make that decision. Executives are usually concerned with whether the audience will be overly estrogenized with two women in the lead. Well, ?The Heat? certainly is not that.?

Solar Powered Boat To Patrol Great Barrier Reef | EarthTechling

The Great Barrier Reef, long considered one of the world?s most precious environmental areas, is a massive expanse?of over 2,900 individual reefs?and 900 islands stretching for over 2,600?kilometres (1,600?mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000?sq?mi). Patrolling it is a daunting task enough for?Queensland?s Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing (DNPRSR) and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA), and doing so in an environmentally friendly way even more so. Thus the two agencies are turning to solar power to help them accomplish this.

Incat Crowther and Marine Engineering Consultants (MEC) has been tapped by the two governmental agencies to construct a?a 24m (78.7 feet) long-range Catamaran Patrol Vessel to work in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA). The catamaran will be as about eco-friendly as a boat of this type can be, sporting ?extensive solar panels, high R-value insulation, zoned air conditioning, as well as window blinds and shutters to reduce the impact of the Queensland sun.?

image via Incat Crowther

image via Incat Crowther

The solar energy collected by the panels will be fed into lithium-ion batteries to

reduce the use of diesel generators both in operation and whilst at anchor at night. The batteries are charged during the day by solar power, allowing the vessel?s diesel generators to remain shut down overnight. At these times, the battery bank will supply power for house loads, including air conditioning. In the event of increased demand, the generators will automatically start. Depending on the load case, they will either provide direct power, or charge the batteries.

Multiple drive train options were evaluated, noted Incat Crowther, with ?hybrid propulsion options at the forefront. Long term costs were taken into account, with the decision being to combine conventional diesels with supplementary solar panels and a highly-efficient hull form.?The vessel will be powered by a pair of Yanmar 6AYM-WGT engines, producing 670kW each. Capable of speeds up to 25 knots, the vessel is optimized for efficient cruising between 12 and 20 knots.?

The catamaran is expected to be in the water early next year.

Paid sick time law passes in NYC, veto overridden

(AP) ? New York City is becoming the most populous place in the United States to make businesses provide workers with paid sick time, after lawmakers overrode a mayoral veto early Thursday to pass a law expected to affect more than 1 million workers.

With the vote, the city joined Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; Seattle; Washington, D.C.; and the state of Connecticut in requiring the benefit for at least some workers. Similar measures have failed in some other places, including Milwaukee, Denver and Philadelphia.

Supporters see the New York measure as a pace-setter, although it has some significant limits and conditions, and they envision such laws becoming a national norm in coming years.

"The catalyst will have been the successful struggle we waged here in New York City," said Dan Cantor, the national executive director of the Working Families Party, which is among groups pushing the cause in Maryland, Oregon, Vermont and Washington states, among others.

Advocates say workers shouldn't have to choose between their physical and financial health. And customers and colleagues shouldn't have to be exposed to employees who come to work sick, supporters add.

Camilo Montes is diabetic and has felt ill at times during his six years working at a Queens car wash, but he has stuck it out instead of going home because he doesn't get paid sick days, he said.

Because he's supporting himself and his mother in Veracruz, Mexico, "I can't afford to lose a day's salary," Montes, 46, said through a Spanish interpreter after paid sick leave supporters rallied outside City Hall Wednesday.

But critics say that the government should leave sick day arrangements to workers and bosses and that the requirement will burden small businesses.

"Faced with this increase in costs, employers will seek to offset them in any number of ways, including reducing other benefits employees receive," entrepreneur-turned-politician Mayor Michael Bloomberg wrote in vetoing the measure earlier this month. "... It will harm the very people it seeks to help."

The huge financial information firm he founded, Bloomberg LP, does offer paid sick time, he has noted. But small companies can't afford it, he says.

Under the new law steered by Councilwoman Gale Brewer, employees of businesses with 20 or more workers would get up to five paid sick days a year beginning in April 2014; the benefit would kick in by October 2015 at enterprises with 15 to 19 workers. All others would have to provide five unpaid sick days per year, meaning that workers couldn't get fired for using those days.

The requirements could be postponed if the city's economy takes a major dive.

Employees could choose to work extra hours instead of taking sick time, a provision aimed at those who would rather swap shifts than stay home sick. That provision could be attractive to restaurant servers, for example, since the paid sick time wouldn't include tips.

Manufacturing companies would be exempt from the paid sick time requirement ? the rationale is that they're struggling, Council Speaker Christine Quinn has said ? though workers would still be protected from firing for taking unpaid sick days.

Besides paid sick leave, city council Thursday voted to create an outside watchdog and make it easier to bring racial profiling claims against the New York Police Department, the nation's largest police force. Both measures passed with enough votes to override expected mayoral vetoes.

Android App Video Review: Despicable Me

In anticipation of the Despicable Me sequel, we've got a great new runner tie-in game from Gameloft. Yes, you heard all of that correctly. It's a movie tie in game that is actually good, if in a tired and overdone genre, and it was indeed developed by Gameloft. Being set in such a hilariously charming universe like Despicable Me certainly doesn't hurt. The game is called Despicable Me, and it is loads of fun, not to mention free.

You play as a random ambitious minion of the super villain Gru, trying to win that coveted minion of the year award by being as despicable as humanly possible. You do this by doing nasty things to other minions as you run, mainly just by knocking into them and sending them flying to their doom. This all adds to your Despicable Multiplier, which is our score multiplier for the game. As you run, you'll also collect loads of bananas, as currency to be spent on power-ups and costumes.

This is a three lane switching runner, like Agent Dash. Despite being in such an overdone genre, it's really very fun and fresh. Unexpected things happen constantly, as new obstacles or enemies are introduced at a moment's notice and you just have to roll with it. Whether you're doing battle with Vector, riding Fluffy Unicorn to collect loads of bananas, or smashing everything in sight as the massive mega minion, there is always something patently insane and absurd going on, and it always keeps ?a smile on your face.

There are two areas to enjoy. Gru's neighborhood, and Gru's lab. Each come with loads of unique settings and obstacles, and there is even an exclusive new villain to fight, created just for this game. As you play and unlock achievements, you can redeem those achievements for Despicable Coins, which let you purchase revives, bypass difficult objectives and much more. They are essentially the premium currency of this game, and yes, all the currencies can be purchased in-app if you choose. But thankfully, Gameloft toned it down on pushing them in your face, though they do push the social Facebook connectivity like nobody's business. In the end, this is just another runner, but it's so well done and set in such an entertaining universe, that it's actually worth playing! And again, it's totally free, and actually feels free.

Name:Jack Stiles
Nickname:Captain Jack
Age:35
Group:Them
Sexuality:Heterosexual

Image
Appearance:He's almost always smiling about something when he's in public. In private, his thoughts may lead him to gloomier expressions, but when he's out, he always seem to be smiling. He never grows a full beard, though occasionally has been known to go without shaving for several days, letting it grow into a full stubble. He wears work shirts and whatever else suits him at the time, though he has discovered he enjoys some of the fashions he's found in magazines and stories related to cowboys. He has made several coats for himself out of deerskin rawhide. The rawhide, being more brittle and less flexible than real leathers, wears out faster and needs to be replaced sooner but that, mixed with the fact that it's deerskin makes it that while it's still in good shape, it protects from a lot of minor pains, such as thistles, bristles and dry branches. It also adds protection, but doesn't nearly totally defend against, some more serious dangers like animal bites and small knives. But the longer he wears it, the quicker it becomes more brittle and the less it protects from.

Likes: Bourbon, hunting (more for the sport of it), cowboys, horses, hand wrapped cigars, shotguns and westerns
Dislikes:"bitchy little girls," putting friends in danger, cars, heat (anything above about 70) and hiding
Fears:being burned alive, being thrown by a horse and failing to protect anyone

Personality: He likes to never show his hand, that's why he always smiles. It's easy to always have a cocky grin than it is to always keep a straight face. He likes to drink and tries to be funny whenever he can. He spends a lot of his free time hunting, even if he never catches or kills anything. He enjoys the sport of hunting and feels it trains him for certain types of tasks he may find himself needing to perform in the future. He enjoys, when he does kill something, using anything he can from it. He's not very skilled, but he's been learning through a mix of books and trial and error to tan hide, make bows and arrows.

He enjoys being over the top and the showiness of things. He enjoys games such as poker, other forms of gambling, guessing games and of the like. He thinks himself brave, though it might just be he's either stupid or doesn't fear for his own life. He rarely shows any concern for his own mortality unless it's directly in threat of coming to an end, and even then he tries to mainly keep it to himself. He worries more about others when it comes to danger. While he prefers either having or being backup when doing something dangerous, if the choice is left up to only one person, he'd rather it be him than anyone else. Besides that, while he has a sense of right or wrong, he feels that what matters is the motive, not the means and is willing to fight dirty to do what he feels is right.

Image
History:Jack Stiles has been a fighter as long as he can remember. When he was young, he would get into fights. When he got older, he got into more of them. It ended up he seemed like he was doing nothing but fighting, so he thought, Hey, if I end up bleeding at the end of each day, why not live off that blood? Fighting for a living actually ended up with him fighting less but fighting harder. He took the spare time to learn more about hunting and gathering in wild. One day, he found a hold of abandoned books and magazines. Almost all of the books were westerns and the magazines were about the same thing. He loved the look of the cowboys and when he read the stories, he began to love the lifestyle and the way the gritty cowboys acted. The stories talked about leather and how it was made from cowhide, but none of them went into the details of how to make it. He ruined a lot of deer hide before he figured out the right formula to make rawhide from deer. It's not a true leather, but it works for him.

As he continued to fight and do other things of a violent nature, he began to be noticed as a possible asset. He began to work as security officer for the village of them and worked his way in the trust of the chief to the position of right hand. Some questioned the decision, Stiles being more of a fighter than a tactician or leader. He personally thinks he could organize and lead if he needed to, but the opportunity hadn't come until the village was found.

Chimps or humans: Who's the better baseball pitcher?

June 26, 2013 ? Little leaguers and professional baseball players alike have our extinct ancestors to thank for their success on the mound, shows a study by George Washington University researcher Neil Roach, which is featured on the cover of the June 27 edition of the journal Nature.

Of course, the ability to throw fast and accurately did not evolve so our ancestors could play ball. Instead, Dr. Roach's study proposes that this ability first evolved nearly 2 million years ago to aid in hunting. Humans are unique in their throwing ability, even when compared to our chimpanzee cousins.

"Chimpanzees are incredibly strong and athletic, yet adult male chimps can only throw about 20 miles per hour -- one-third the speed of a 12-year-old little league pitcher," said Dr. Roach, the study's lead author and a postdoctoral scientist in GW's Center for the Advanced Study of Hominid Paleobiology in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.

Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Roach and colleagues from Harvard University set out to discover how humans throw so well, and when and why this ability evolved.

Using a 3-D camera system, like those used to make video games and animated movies, they recorded the throwing motions of collegiate baseball players, finding that the human shoulder acts much like a slingshot during a throw, storing and releasing large amounts of energy.

"When humans throw, we first rotate our arms backwards away from the target. It is during this 'arm-cocking' phase that humans stretch the tendons and ligaments crossing their shoulder and store elastic energy," Dr. Roach said. "When this energy is released, it accelerates the arm forward, generating the fastest motion the human body produces, resulting in a very fast throw."

Dr. Roach and colleagues also found that certain anatomical features in the torso, shoulder and arm that evolved in our hominin ancestors made this energy storage possible. These features that allow humans to throw so well first appeared in the species Homo erectus approximately 2 million years ago.

"We think that throwing was probably most important early on in terms of hunting behavior, enabling our ancestors to effectively and safely kill big game," Dr. Roach said. "Eating more calorie-rich meat and fat would have allowed our ancestors to grow larger brains and bodies and expand into new regions of the world -- all of which helped make us who we are today."

Dr. Roach's study may also have important modern-day implications for some athletes. Baseball pitchers, for example, throw much more frequently than our ancestors probably did.

"At the end of the day, despite the fact that we evolved to throw, when we overuse this ability it can end up injuring us," Dr. Roach said.

The next step for Dr. Roach and his colleagues is researching what humans were throwing so long ago, especially since stone projectile points don't appear in the archaeological record until much more recently. The likely weapons of choice? Rocks and sharpened wooden spears.

First look at the new AOL Reader beta, a surprisingly pleasing way to get your RSS fix

AOL Reader

Google Reader will come to an end on July 1, one week from now. We're not that short on options to continue receiving our RSS fix, but one that quietly emerged in recent days is AOL Reader. Currently in beta form, and web only, access to the new service is now available. You're told to log in and request an invite, but it seems as though verifying your email address is about all you need to do to get in and take a look. So, we did.

AOL Reader is currently only available on the web, though an iOS application is promised for the future. You can import your current subscriptions from Google Reader, though you'll need to export the data first via Google Takeout (something we'd highly recommend doing anyway before July 1.) Google exports a series of files, but the one you'll need is the one titled as "subscriptions.xml." Should you have any issues importing this to AOL Reader, try changing the extension from .xml to .opml, and you should be good to go.

While functional, Google Reader's web interface always felt somewhat basic, and a little chaotic. AOL Reader takes a similar form factor, but with a much prettier design. It's actually a surprisingly pleasing way to read your RSS feeds. There's a selection of viewing options, including list, card, pane and full views, a dark and light theme to customize the appearance to your own personal tastes and a choice of different font sizes. AOL Reader is much, much easier on the eye than Google Reader.

An interesting touch, perhaps to be appreciated more by the power users, is a bunch of keyboard shortcuts. Pretty much full navigation of AOL Reader can take place without touching the mouse, and to help us get started there's a handy guide as to which keys do what.

We're still only scratching the surface, but AOL Reader is a surprisingly good product. Having come from quite literally nowhere, what we have is a nice looking, perfectly functional, free RSS client. It may be late to the party, especially since the Feedly train continues to roll, but if you're undecided on where to go after Google shuts down Reader, AOL is worth a look. And of course, we still haven't seen the accompanying iOS apps yet. But this is a good start. Go ahead and give it a try, and let us know what you think!

George Lucas and Mellody Hobson.

The force was undoubtedly with "Star Wars" creator George Lucas as he wed longtime girlfriend Mellody Hobson Saturday afternoon, as a director's spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

The pair tied the knot at Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, Calif. surrounded by and attended to by a bevy of stars: Former Senator Bill Bradley gave away the bride, PBS' Bill Moyers officiated, Van Morrison and Janelle Monae performed at the reception, Steven Spielberg offered a toast and Francis Ford Coppola read a poem by Maya Angelou.

But there was room for Lucas' family as well: His son Jett was best man and his daughter Amanda and Katie were bridesmaids.

Samuel L. Jackson (who played Jedi Mace Windu in the "Star Wars" prequels" tweeted good wishes to the couple:

And Ron Howard, who attended the ceremony, later tweeted his report:

The pair were engaged in January after first meeting in 2006; Hobson, who serves on the board of directors for Hollywood studio Dreamworks Animation SKG Inc., cosmetics company Estee Lauder Companies Inc., coffeehouse chain Starbucks Corp. and Internet coupon company Groupon Inc., is 44. Lucas is 69.

(AP) ? The Tampa Bay Rays believe they have a star in the making in Wil Myers.

The rookie homered in his home debut Monday night, continuing an impressive first week in the majors and helping Jeremy Hellickson beat the Blue Jays 4-1 to end Toronto's 11-game winning streak.

"He's very comfortable," Rays manager Joe Maddon said about Myers. "He's not overwhelmed whatsoever."

Myers made his major league debut in Boston at the start of a seven-game road trip that ended Sunday. He hit a grand slam off CC Sabathia for his first big league homer during a loss Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

This time, the 22-year-old outfielder hit the second of three straight Tampa Bay homers in the second inning, connecting in his first at-bat at Tropicana Field.

Myers, who's hitting .294 with two home runs, a double and seven RBIs after eight games, received a standing ovation and took a curtain call for a crowd of 11,407 getting its initial close-up view of the key acquisition in the offseason trade that sent pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis to Kansas City for the power-hitting right fielder and other prospects.

"I wasn't sure what really to do but everyone kept cheering so I thought that might be my cue to go out there," Myers said. "Actually, I saw that Zoilo Almonte guy get one (in New York) and everyone got up and kept cheering, so I thought it was the same deal for me."

Myers' drive to center off Esmil Rogers (3-3) was sandwiched between home runs by James Loney and Sam Fuld as Tampa Bay went deep three times in a span of eight pitches. Luke Scott added a bloop RBI double to make it 4-0 in the third, and that was all the support Hellickson needed.

The Rays estimated the ball Myers hit, which caromed off a wall beyond center field, traveled 422 feet before bouncing back onto the field.

"The ball comes off the bat hard with him. It makes a different sound," Maddon said. "He's one of those guys. And the thing that I like is all this stuff is going through the middle of the field."

A night after scoring a season-high 13 runs at home to complete a three-game sweep of Baltimore, the Blue Jays were limited to four singles and five walks. They came up short in their bid to extend the longest winning streak in the majors since Detroit won 12 straight in 2011.

Hellickson (6-3) gave up J.P. Arencibia's single, walked four and struck out four. He allowed only one runner past first base ? in the second inning, when Colby Rasmus walked and moved to third when Arencibia followed with his hit to center field.

The Blue Jays stranded Rasmus, who drew three of Toronto's five walks, when Maicer Izturis grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Toronto finally broke through in the eighth when it loaded the bases with one out against Alex Torres with a pair of singles and a walk. Jose Bautista grounded into a force play to drive in a run before Edwin Encarnacion flied out to end the threat.

Fernando Rodney worked the ninth for the Rays, earning his 16th save in 21 opportunities.

"The three home runs hurt ... but their pitching shut us down. That was the story of the game," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "It was a nice little streak. We'll start another one tomorrow. Losses are never easy, but we've been on a nice little roll."

The Blue Jays' longest winning streak in nearly 15 years matched the best in club history. They also won 11 straight in 1987 and 1998.

The Rays began the day last in the AL East, one percentage point behind the surging Blue Jays, who gained seven games on Tampa Bay during their winning streak.

Despite the loss, Toronto has won 15 of 19 while outscoring opponents 103-57 to get back into the division race led by the Boston Red Sox.

Loney, Myers and Fuld went deep off Rogers with one out in the second, just the second time in franchise history ? first at Tropicana Field ? that Tampa Bay has hit three straight homers. Evan Longoria, Willy Aybar and Dioner Navarro did it on June 9, 2008, against the Angels.

Myers also had a single and was caught trying to steal second base in the sixth inning. He's 10 for 34 overall since being promoted from Triple-A Durham and is the first player in Rays history with seven RBIs in his first eight career games.

"He's got it all. He's got a chance to be a really, really good player," Gibbons said. "It's all in there."

NOTES: Toronto plans to activate SS Jose Reyes (left ankle) from the disabled list Wednesday. ... Blue Jays LHP J.A. Happ, who suffered a skull fracture and a sprained right knee when he fell to the ground at Tropicana Field after being struck behind the left ear by a line drive on May 7, is expected back at the ballpark Tuesday. Gibbons said Happ, slowed by the knee injury, is throwing off a mound at the team's spring training complex in Dunedin, Fla., but still has a ways to go before he pitches again. ... In preparation for his home debut, the Rays had Myers out on the field early to take fly balls in the domed stadium with the lights on and off. ... Blue Jays RHP Brandon Morrow (forearm) has not resumed throwing, while 3B Brett Lawrie (left ankle) is probably a couple of weeks from starting a rehab assignment. ... Rays LHP David Price, sidelined since May 15 by a left triceps strain, is scheduled to make his second rehab start for Class-A Charlotte on Wednesday.

Hong Kong silent so far on possible Snowden extradition

HONG KONG (AP) ? Hong Kong was silent Saturday on whether a former National Security Agency contractor should be extradited to the United States now that he has been charged with espionage, but some legislators said the decision should be up to the Chinese government.

Edward Snowden, believed to be holed up in Hong Kong, has admitted providing information to the news media about two highly classified NSA surveillance programs.

It is not known if the U.S. government has made a formal extradition request to Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong government had no immediate reaction to the charges against Snowden. Police Commissioner, Andy Tsang, when was asked about the development, told reporters only that the case would be dealt with according to the law. A police statement said it was "inappropriate" for the police to comment on the case.

When China regained control of Hong Kong in 1997, the former British colony was granted a high degree of autonomy and granted rights and freedoms not seen on mainland China. However, under the city's mini constitution Beijing is allowed to intervene in matters involving defense and diplomatic affairs.

Outspoken legislator Leung Kwok-hung said Beijing should instruct Hong Kong to protect Snowden from extradition before his case gets dragged through the court system. Leung also urged the people of Hong Kong to "take to the streets to protect Snowden."

Another legislator, Cyd Ho, vice-chairwoman of the pro-democracy Labour Party, said China "should now make its stance clear to the Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region) government" before the case goes before a court.

China has urged Washington to provide explanations following the disclosures of National Security Agency programs which collect millions of telephone records and track foreign Internet activity on U.S. networks, but it has not commented on Snowden's status in Hong Kong.

A formal extradition request, which could drag through appeal courts for years, would pit Beijing against Washington at a time China tries to deflect U.S. accusations that it carries out extensive surveillance on American government and commercial operations.

Snowden's whereabouts have not been publicly known since he checked out of a Hong Kong hotel on June 10. He said in an interview with the South China Morning Post that he hoped to stay in the autonomous region of China because he has faith in "the courts and people of Hong Kong to decide my fate." Tsang said in interview broadcast on local television that he could not comment when asked about a local newspaper report that Snowden was in a police "safe house."

Snowden and his supporters have also spoken of his seeking asylum from Iceland.

A prominent former politician in Hong Kong, Martin Lee, the founding chairman of the Democratic Party, said he doubted whether Beijing would intervene at this stage.

"Beijing would only intervene according to my understanding at the last stage. If the magistrate said there is enough to extradite, then Mr. Snowden can then appeal," he said.

Lee said Beijing could then decide at the end of the appeal process if it wanted Snowden extradited or not.

A one-page criminal complaint unsealed Friday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, said Snowden engaged in unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence information. Both are charges under the Espionage Act. Snowden also is charged with theft of government property. All three crimes carry a maximum 10-year prison penalty.

The complaint will be an integral part of the U.S. government's effort to have Snowden extradited from Hong Kong, a process that could become a prolonged legal battle. Snowden could contest extradition on grounds of political persecution.

Hong Kong lawyer Mark Sutherland said that the filing of a refugee, torture or inhuman punishment claim acts as an automatic bar on any extradition proceedings until those claims can be assessed.

"Some asylum seekers came to Hong Kong 10 years ago and still haven't had their protection claims assessed," Sutherland said.

Organizers of a public protest in support of Snowden last week said Saturday that there were no plans for similar demonstrations this weekend.

Flooding may force 100,000 from west Canada homes

HIGHWOOD RIVER, Calgary (AP) ? Water levels from heavy flooding in western Canada were expected to peak around noon on Friday possibly forcing as many as 100,000 people from their homes, officials said.

Torrential rains and widespread flooding throughout southern Alberta on Thursday forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway and isolated the mountain resort towns of Banff and Canmore.

The flooding washed out roads and bridges, left at least one person missing and caused cars, couches and refrigerators to float away.

Communities were hit hard just south of Calgary, a city of more than a million people that hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Many downtown neighborhoods were ordered evacuated as the evening went on. Officials said the evacuation would take place in stages over the next few days. The province reported that 12 communities were under states of emergency.

One woman who had been stranded on top of a trailer was missing after it was swept away, STARS air ambulance spokesman Cam Heke said.

Motorists who were trapped overnight Wednesday by water spilling over Canada's main western highway had to be rescued by helicopter, Town of Canmore spokeswoman Sally Caudill said.

"I woke up at about three o'clock in morning to the sound of this kind of rumbling, and it was the creek," said Wade Graham, a resident of Canmore. "At first it was just intense, pretty powerful, amazing thing to watch. As daylight came, it just got bigger and bigger and wider and wider, and it's still getting bigger and bigger and wider and wider."

He added, "I watched a refrigerator go by, I watched a shed go by, I watched couches go by. It's insane."

Bruce Burrell, director of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, said water levels on the Bow River aren't expected to subside until Saturday afternoon. The Bow River Basin already has been battered with up to 100 mm (3.9 inches) of rain.

"Depending on the extent of flooding we experience overnight, there may be areas of the city where people are not going to be able to get into until the weekend," he told a news conference.

In High River, Mounties asked people with motorboats to help rescue at least a dozen stranded homeowners.

"We have people on their rooftops who were unable to evacuate fast enough," said RCMP Sgt. Patricia Neely.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for the affected areas, estimating as much as 100 millimetres more rain could fall in the next two days.

Acting can be a bruising business, as Gandolfini knew too well

By Eric Kelsey and Nichola Groom

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - James Gandolfini, the beefy American actor who died on Wednesday in Italy at age 51, cut an unforgettable figure on screen and stage, earning a reputation as an earnest performer who would go to extremes to prepare for a part.

But Gandolfini's sudden death and famous work ethic also have made evident the physical and mental stresses and time demands many actors endure for their roles.

The cause of death for the star of HBO's "The Sopranos" has yet to be determined and an autopsy was to be conducted in Rome on Friday. HBO said he may have suffered a heart attack.

Gandolfini had spoken of the punishing routines and rituals he put himself through in his eight years playing Tony Soprano, a conflicted New Jersey mob boss who suffered from panic attacks and saw a therapist to work through anxiety and mother issues.

"If the guy had to look good and be handsome and happy, the hours we worked would certainly not help," Gandolfini said in an interview with the Associated Press in 2007, the same year the series ended.

"They (the hours) helped me a great deal... I was allowed to be grumpy and tired and look like (crap)."

He won three Emmys and a Golden Globe for the role.

Judith Orloff, a Los Angeles psychiatrist who counts many actors as clients, describes the stresses actors suffer as "deadly," often manifesting in addictions, such as drugs, alcohol and sex or in simply ignoring doctors' recommendations.

"Their stress levels are extremely high and what that means is adrenaline and cortisol are rolling around in their bodies, which decreases immunity and increases all kinds of health problems and anxiety and depression," Orloff told Reuters.

It was not known if Gandolfini had any health problems. In 2002, a representative for Gandolfini confirmed to the New York Daily News and other media organizations that Gandolfini had struggled in the past with substance abuse.

But his weight, a defining characteristic in his portrayal of Tony Soprano, was an issue. Gandolfini said he gained weight steadily over the 86 episodes he played the character and afterward, too.

In 2009, he told Vanity Fair magazine that he had once described himself as a 260-pound Woody Allen and then said, "And now I'm a 285-pound Woody Allen."

Since "The Sopranos," Gandolfini starred on Broadway in the dark comedy "God of Carnage" and had worked on several films, including last year's thriller "Zero Dark Thirty."

'INCREDIBLY PUNISHING ROLE'

Gandolfini's peers considered him a dedicated actor who stayed in character between takes. He insisted on wearing Tony's trademark heavy bathrobe under the hot studio lights, said Brett Martin, a GQ correspondent who has written about Gandolfini.

"It required a descent into Tony's psyche to give the performance he did," said Martin, whose upcoming book, "Difficult Men" examines the legacy begun by Gandolfini's portrayal of the deeply flawed Soprano. "It was an incredibly punishing role physically."

Actors like Gandolfini who channel their characters' habits and psychology - notably "method actors" - have difficulty letting go of the role after leaving the set, Orloff said.

"I've seen patients get the illness of their characters," she said. "They are so creative, they are so talented they become one with their characters. And if you are playing Hannibal Lecter it's a bit difficult unless you really know yourself."

"Sopranos" cast members grew accustomed to Gandolfini whipping himself into an emotional frenzy of grunts and curses before shooting a scene or hitting himself in the head if he forgot any lines, Martin said.

"The sheer physicality was the problem," he said. "Underneath this was a genuine sweet and shy guy.

"He'll always be Tony. He was probably always going to be Tony one way or another, which I can understand being a burden."
