Posted on March 16th, 2012 by Karen

We continue our look at Paul Mah?s article on CIO, ?How to Build Multiple Layers of Security for Your Small Business.? On Monday, we covered network firewall, virtual private networks, intrusion detection and prevention systems and malware detection. Here are the other essentials for any multi-faceted network security strategy:

  • Whitelisting. Whitelisting creates a list of ?known? files to be executed which requires an initial baseline scan to construct a data base of whitelisted applications. Whitelisting has had several problems which has hindered its adoption by business. You should verify if the whitelisting software can coexist with traditional antivirus software when considering.
  • Spam filtering. There are many was to combat spam such as channeling all incoming email messages through a specialized cloud service provider, server-based spam filtering software or dedicated anti-spam appliances.
  • Up-to-date software. An important defense in any security strategy is ensuring that software and security patches are kept up-to-date.
  • Physical security. Given the fact that security or network appliances can be reset to factory defaults easily, unsecured Ethernet ports can lead right past a firewall and password files can be easily deciphered from stolen storage devices, physical security is a crucial factor in protecting the network.
