Walmart to unleash its Vudu magic on South America, Europe, Asia

Walmart to unleash its Vudu magic on South America, Europe, Asia

Walmart's Vudu service will be dipping a toe in foreign waters for the first time, with a planned expansion that could see it landing in as many as 30 new countries. Mexico will be the first to get the service -- some time in June -- before it continues in a southerly direction toward other Latin American states. The rest of the expansion will cover Europe (including the UK and Ireland) and Asia, but won't happen until later on in the year. While Netflix has already beaten a path away from US shores, Walmart clearly hopes its strong retail presence (5000 stores in 26 countries) will help it earn more than just a tourist visa.

Standards For Painless Press Release Publishing Products ? Web ...

Experienced online marketers know all about the power of effective press releases as a means for achieving fast awareness about a business, new site or product release. The following article looks into three easy to apply tips that will help you write a press release that makes an impact.

If you want to get the best results with your release, then figure out what you want to do with it before writing it. The release should be structured out in such a way that it?s totally newsworthy. You should focus on getting all your facts right and get them in place before launching your press release. As you know, all newspapers are aware that their news stories must stick to the relevant facts. As you realize, you can only do so much when it comes to writing style so the reader does not get confused about what you are doing. How far you deviate from that general principle is up to you, but a serious press release will never deviate at all from it. You really do have to be careful when it comes to being fictional with your story just in case it attracts a lot of attention. But a great story is not always possible, we know, and so just report the facts. But remember the last thing you want to do is make up a false story just to try to make for an interesting release. What most people do is decide on their keyword phrase, and then simply put their release together. There is no need to talk about specific benefits because this is not sales or marketing copy in the usual sense. Visit Teen Rhinoplasty for excellent info.

A properly structured and formatted press release is something else you need to learn, but that is very simple to find online. You will also need to have your basic business information such as the location. Don?t forget to include your contact information at the top of your press release, which would be helpful particularly when somebody wants to schedule an interview or requires more details. No need to get shy about giving out your contact information, and we do not know what to tell you if you do not want to do that, either. Using press releases can be enormously valuable if you understand what needs to be done and avoided.

Become Inspired with The Art of Photography Online

The phrase, "a picture paints a thousand words", gets thrown around a lot, but it is so true. If you sit down with a picture, a photo, or an image, and write the emotions it makes you feel down, you start to really understand and see what this phrase means. An outstanding piece of photography has the potential to create a whole story, it has the energy to make people feel real emotions, and touch them on a personal level. These factors alone should be enough to inspire anyone into picking up a camera, stepping outside, and capturing something really special.

The good news about photography is, you don't have to be an expert to be inspired, you don't have to know every nut and bolt to get started, there is no danger. Of course over time you get better and progress, but to start with, all you need is a camera.

There is so much out there to take pictures of, it's all about finding what you like, and going with it.

If you're into music and bands, you may not enjoy taking photos of villages and antique areas. You should let what influences your personality reflect itself in your photography work. Let's take the music example, as there are always at least a few photographers at any music show that has been promoted mildly. There is much you can do with these photos to make them really stand out, and capture what the band is about. When stepping into the role of the photographer, you need to realize what you're taking a photo of, and what do the contents of that photo want to be seen as, what do they want to mean to the world? Thinking like this will allow you to be creative, and let the contents of the picture speak for itself. This is but one small example, but you can see how easy it is to be inspired by your own tastes and interests, sometimes finding inspiration isn't outside of you, it's inside, looking at your inner interests can inspire you more than you think it can.

One website which offers amazing inspiration to all it's viewers is MomentHunters.com. At Moment Hunters, they have a wide database or articles, photos, teachings and much more, to help you learn the art of photography, and become inspired by what's already out there, and what you can do to add to it. By looking at other photographers work, you can see how they approach things, and become inspired and influenced by that. You should never shut yourself off from others, as the whole experience of photography is about learning, improving and progressing as you go. You may find an image that has the perfect light balance for something you're working on for example, and you may like to know how they achieved that balance. At Moment Hunters you can learn everything you wish to learn about the art of photography, and that's why it's such a valuable resource for all photographers.

Open Office Hours With TechCrunch Europe

officeHours1Doing meetups and attending conferences is great for uncovering new startups and entrepreneurs, but sometimes you just want to sit down over coffee for a few minutes and explain what you're doing. So I'm starting a new series of one-to-one sessions which will hopefully be fairly regular (schedule allowing). I'll be doing "Open Office Hours" sessions at various locations associated with startups, and as I'm based in London that's where I'll mainly be doing them. The idea is you apply for a slot and wait for confirmation. This isn't about long meetings, it's more about getting a quick heads-up and then following up later. Next week I'll be at startup space White Bear Yard, home to Passion Capital and a number of their startups. You can sign up for a slot here (April 16). The next session after that will be at Innovation Warehouse, slots here (May 1st), and after that at Campus London, sign up here (June 11). To follow other sessions, here's my OHours profile or follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

FCC Fridays: April 13, 2012

Image
We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol' Federal Communications Commission's site. Since we couldn't possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we've gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!

Samsung Galaxy S Aviator (U.S. Cellular)

U.S. Cellular's 4G LTE network may be brand new, but the $99.99 Samsung Galaxy S Aviator looks and feels an awful lot like last year's Samsung Droid Charge?($99.99, 4 stars) for Verizon Wireless. That's not a bad thing: the Aviator has a sharp, beautiful display, good call quality, and a great camera and camcorder. It's also the only smartphone?available to tap into U.S. Cellular's 4G LTE network. It's a good choice if you live in an LTE coverage area and want in right now, but the carrier offers better options if you stick with 3G.

Physical Design and Call Quality
As previously mentioned, the Aviator bears a close resemblance to the Samsung Droid Charge. Like the Charge, it measures 5.1 by 2.6 by .5 inches (HWD) and weighs 5 ounces. The area beneath the display dips down into a slightly pointed chin shape, and features four physical function keys. The display itself is another lovely 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen from Samsung. At 800-by-480-pixels, it is lower resolution than the 960-by-540 display on the?Motorola Electrify?($129.99, 4.5 stars), but the colors on Super AMOLED Plus are richer. Typing on the on-screen QWERTY keyboard feels fine in both portrait and landscape modes, and dialing phone numbers is fast.

The Aviator is a dual-band EV-DO Rev A (800/1900 MHz) and 4G LTE device with 802.11b /g/n Wi-Fi.?Voice quality is a strong point. Reception is solid, and calls sound clear and full in the phone's earpiece. The speakerphone also sounds good and is just loud enough to use outdoors. Calls made with the phone sound clear and easy to understand, with decent noise cancellation. Calls also sounded good and voice dialing worked well over a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars). Battery life over 3G was average, at 6 hours and 28 minutes of talk time.

4G LTE
U.S. Cellular was the winner for customer satisfaction in our most recent Readers' Choice survey, and is the seventh-largest carrier in the nation, with about six million customers in 26 states. The carrier roams on Verizon and Sprint, offering nationwide 3G coverage when outside of its native coverage area.

The carrier's new LTE network currently covers six regions: Madison-Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Lawton-Wichita Falls, Texas/Oklahoma; Bangor-Portland and Presque Isle-Houlton, Maine; rural eastern North Carolina; and metropolitan Iowa. While it's the only LTE carrier in Maine right now, at least part of all of those other areas are covered by Verizon's 4G LTE. The carrier plans to expand throughout 2012 and 2013.

We haven't yet tested U.S. Cellular's 4G network, and the carrier isn't quoting speeds publicly. We're expecting fast LTE speeds like the ones we've seen on Verizon, as opposed to the more-like-3G speeds on MetroPCS, because of U.S. Cellular's comfortable spectrum position. That can mean average download speeds around 9.5Mbps, like we saw in our?Fastest Mobile Networks tests.?

4G plans for the Aviator cost the same as 3G plans for U.S. Cellular's other devices; that's a good thing. You can get 450 minutes of voice calls, unlimited texting, and 5GB of 4G data for $79.99 per month. That same plan on Verizon costs $89.99 per month, and you only get 2GB of data (or 4GB, for a limited time). An additional $25 per month allows you to use the Aviator as a mobile hotspot, and share its 4G connection with other devices, like a laptop or tablet, though you're pooling from the same 5GB of data.

Justin Bieber Covers Seventeen, Loves Selena Gomez

Justin Bieber may be singing about life as "Boyfriend" these days, but the 18-year old knows it takes more than just a few catchy lyrics to actually satisfy the opposite sex.

So, how does he approach his relationship with Selena Gomez? Simple, the singer tells the latest issue of Seventeen.

"I'm just trying to make her happy, that's all. I think it's important to make all women feel like they're princesses, because every girl is a princess. I'm serious."

Justin Bieber Seventeen Cover

Aside from making women swoon with that quote, Justin touched on a number of other topics with the magazine. To wit:

Who is his role model? "Usher is who I look to for guidance. From the beginning, he told me to put family first and you'll always succeed, because your family will never leave you. He told me to always stay humble and never forget where I came from."

How will he remain close to his fans? "A lot of times, when artists grow older, they lose their younger fans because they're just trying to get older fans. But if you try to make good music, then you'll just appease everybody. I just want to make music that's good for everybody."

What's his biggest fear? "Losing a family member…  I've never lost anyone, so I don't know what the feeling would be. It would just be scary."

Jobless claims cast cloud on labor market

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing for jobless aid rose last week to the highest level since January, a development that could raise fears the labor market recovery was stalling after job creation slowed in March.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 380,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday, defying economists' expectations for a drop to 355,000.

The four-week moving average for new claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends, rose 4,250 to 368,500.

Some economists blamed the Easter holidays for the spike in claims and expected applications to trend lower in coming weeks.

"It's very difficult to know the extent to which that's driven by seasonal effects from Easter or not," said Eric Green, chief economist at TD Securities in New York.

"This is not a game changer, this does not confirm the weakness in the report we saw last Friday. We suspect that much of the increase was due to seasonal issues and we would therefore expect it to drift lower."

The claims data comes in the wake of Friday's disappointing employment report for March, which showed the economy created 120,000 new jobs, the smallest amount since October.

Despite the rise in claims last week, both first-time applications for unemployment aid and the four-week average held below the 400,000 mark, implying steady job gains.

U.S. stock index futures pared gains on the data, while U.S. government debt prices rose. The dollar weakened against the euro and the yen.

There was good news in other data on Thursday, with producer prices flat in March and the trade deficit narrowing sharply in February.

The U.S. trade deficit shrank 12.4 percent to $46 billion in February, the biggest month-to-month decline since May 2009, the Commerce Department said, as exports hit a record high.

That could prompt economists to raise their estimates for first-quarter gross domestic product.

U.S. producer prices were unchanged last month after advancing 0.4 percent in February.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected prices at farms, factories and refineries to rise 0.3 percent.

Wholesale prices excluding volatile food and energy costs rose 0.3 percent after February's 0.2 percent gain.

That was a touch above economists' expectations for a 0.2 percent advance and marked the fifth successive month of increases in core PPI.

Over one-third of the rise in core PPI was attributed to prices for light motor trucks. Higher costs for passenger cars, soaps and detergents also contributed to the advance in core PPI.

However, manufacturers have limited scope to pass on these increased costs to consumers given the still considerable slack in the economy.

Overall producer prices were held back by a 2.0 percent fall in gasoline, the largest decline since October, after a 4.3 percent jump in February. That offset a 0.2 percent rise in food prices, which halted three straight months of declines.

However, gasoline prices rose 7.5 percent, when seasonal factors are excluded.

In the 12 months to March, wholesale prices increased 2.8 percent, the smallest increase since June 2010, after advancing 3.3 percent in February.

Outside food and energy, producer prices were pushed up by light motor trucks prices, which rebounded 0.7 percent after falling 0.4 percent in February. Passenger car prices rose 0.8 percent after edging up 0.1 percent the prior month.

The increases likely reflected strong demand for automobiles.

In the 12 months to March, core producer prices increased 2.9 percent after rising 3.0 percent the previous month.

Researchers say crab-based computing possible, lobsters throw up claws in disbelief

Japanese researchers say crab-based computing possible, lobsters throw up claws in disbelief
IBM's Holey Optochip? Yawn. Fujitsu's K supercomputer? Yesterday's news. Forget about boring old conventional computing stuff, the future of computer technology lies in crabs -- lots and lots of crabs. Researchers at Kobe University and the University of the West the England's Unconventional Computing Centre have discovered that properly herded crabs can signal the AND, OR and NOT arguments essential to computers, not to mention those crucial 1s and 0s. Forcing two swarms of crabs into one, for instance, represents the OR gate -- a trick the computational crustaceans pulled off fairly reliably. Not every operation was pincer perfect, however, as the crabs tended to stumble a bit through attempts at signaling the AND function. At least guiding a group of crabs isn't as tough as herding cats -- researchers used a shadow to imitate a predatory bird and direct the hapless creatures accordingly. Sure, it may not be the first biological computer, but it just might be the first fear-based computer.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Jennifer Hudson takes center stage in a questionnaire that potential jurors are being asked to fill out to determine if they will be allowed to decide whether or not a man is guilty in the slayings of the singer's mother, brother and nephew.

Nine of the 66 questions released to The Associated Press and other media outlets Friday dealt with Hudson's career in movies, television and as an author.

Prospective jurors were asked if they have ever watched "American Idol," the television show that brought Hudson to fame, or if they saw "Dreamgirls," the motion picture for which she won an Academy Award. They also were asked if they'd ever seen her perform or read her book, "I Got This: How I Changed my Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down."

In what is apparently a reference to Hudson's work as a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers, one question read: "Do you belong to any organization for which Jennifer Hudson is a spokesperson?"

The rest of the questions were standard for prospective jurors in high profile cases. They were asked about their education, employment, family, military service and encounters with the criminal justice system, along with hobbies, websites they frequent, magazines and newspapers they read and how they get their news.

Legal experts say the reason is simple: Attorneys need to get a sense of whether Hudson's fame could sway those who will ultimately be selected to sit on the jury.

All those television and movie appearances could create a familiarity that poses a danger to criminal defendants.

"You don't want to get someone who is so simpatico with Jennifer Hudson and her plight, who feels like they are champions for Jennifer ... and who wants to protect her or not disappoint her," said Joseph Tacopina, a prominent defense attorney in New York.

Equally dangerous, and what the attorneys will certainly be looking for, are would-be jurors who say they don't know who Hudson is, despite living in her hometown, where she is extremely popular.

"They're either from Mars or they're being dishonest," Tacopina said. "Either one is not a good thing."

Joel Levin, a former federal prosecutor who was on the team that won a conviction of former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, agreed that most of the concerns in such a case would come from the defense side of the aisle.

"Their concern is (jurors) think she's great and bend over backwards because of who she is," he said.

Hudson is expected to regularly attend the trial of William Balfour, her sister's estranged husband. He is charged in the slayings of Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, brother, Jason Hudson, 29, and nephew, Julian King, 7. Prosecutors also have indicated she could be called as a witness.

Cops ID college shooting suspect as One Goh, 43

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? A 43-year-old former student of a small Christian university in California opened fire at the school, killing at least seven people and setting off an intense, chaotic manhunt that ended with his capture at a nearby shopping center, authorities said.

Police Chief Howard Jordan said One L. Goh is in custody after he surrendered about an hour after the shooting at Oikos University, which also wounded three. Jordan said police have recovered the weapon they believe he used during the rampage.

"It's going to take us a few days to put the pieces together," Jordan said. "We do not have a motive."

Jordan said there were about 35 people in or near the building when gunfire broke out Monday morning. Of the seven fatalities, five died at the scene and another two at the hospital. Three wounded victims are in stable condition, he said.

"This unprecedented tragedy was shocking and senseless," Jordan said.

Soon after the shooting, heavily armed officers swarmed the school in a large industrial park near the Oakland airport and, for at least an hour, believed the gunman could still be inside.

Art Richards said he was driving by the university on his way to pick up a friend when he spotted a woman hiding in the bushes and pulled over. When he approached her, she said, "I'm shot" and showed him her arm.

"She had a piece of her arm hanging out," Richards said, noting that she was wounded near the elbow.

As police arrived, Richards said he heard 10 gunshots coming from inside the building. The female victim told him that she saw the gunman shoot one person point-blank in the chest and one in the head.

Tashi Wangchuk, whose wife attended the school and witnessed the shooting, said he was told by police that the gunman first shot a woman at the front desk, then continued shooting randomly in classrooms.

Wangchuk said his wife, Dechen Wangzom, was in her vocational nursing class when she heard gunshots. She locked the door and turned off the lights, Wangchuk said he was told by his wife, who was still being questioned by police Monday afternoon.

The gunman "banged on the door several times and started shooting outside and left," he said. Wangchuk said no one was hurt inside his wife's classroom, but that the gunman shot out the glass in the door. He said she did not know the man.

"She's a hero," he said.

Television footage showed bloodied victims on stretchers being loaded into ambulances. Several bodies covered in sheets were laid out on a patch of grass at the school. One body could be seen being loaded into a van.

Myung Soon Ma, the school's secretary, said she could not provide any details about what happened at the private school, which serves the Korean community with courses from theology to Asian medicine.

"I feel really sad, so I cannot talk right now," she said, speaking from her home.

Those connected to the school, including the founder and several students, described the gunman as a former nursing student. The chief said Goh is a Korean national who's a former student of the university.

At Highland Hospital, Dawinder Kaur's family told the Oakland Tribune that she was being treated for a gunshot to her elbow.

The U.S. Army Reservist told her family that that the gunman was a student in her nursing class who had been absent for months before returning Monday. The gunman entered the classroom and ordered students to line up against the wall.

When he showed his gun, students began running and he opened fire, her family said.

"She told me that a guy went crazy and she got shot," brother Paul Singh told the newspaper. "She was running. She was crying; she was bleeding, it was wrong."

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, told the newspaper that he did not know if the shooter was expelled or dropped out. Kim said he heard about 30 rapid-fire gunshots in the building.

"I stayed in my office," he said.

Deborah Lee, who was in an English language class, said she heard five to six gunshots at first. "The teacher said, 'Run,' and we run," she said. "I was OK, because I know God protects me. I'm not afraid of him."

The suspect was detained at a Safeway supermarket about three miles from the university, about an hour after the shooting.

A security guard at the supermarket approached the man because he was acting suspiciously, KGO-TV reported. The man told the guard that he needed to talk to police because he shot people, and the guard called authorities.

"He didn't look like he had a sign of relief on him. He didn't look like he had much of any emotion on his face," said Lisa Resler, who was buying fruit at Safeway with her 4-year-old daughter when she saw the man.

According to its website, Oikos University also offers studies in music and nursing. A telephone message left on the university's main voicemail was not immediately returned.

Jerry Sung, the university's accountant, said the school offers courses in both Korean and English to less than 100 students. He said the campus consisted of one building. Sung said many of its students went on to work in nursing and ministry.

"The founder felt there was a need for theology and nursing courses for Korean-Americans who were newer to the community," Sung said. "He felt they would feed more comfortable if they had Korean-American professors."

In group lottery wins splitting the spoils tough

(AP) ? Every once in a while a lottery jackpot becomes so huge that people can't help but band together in the hope of increasing their odds, pooling their money for a wad of tickets and promising to evenly split the spoils. Seems like a good idea until lightning strikes and the group wins.

Then the future involves not only luxury, but also lawsuits. Numerous group winners have been sued by people claiming to have pitched in for the ticket, creating messy fights over what money will be left once the attorneys are paid. And most state lotteries don't give much official guidance on how to avoid such problems.

On Monday, rumors swirled about the three people holding winning tickets from the record-breaking $656 million Mega Millions drawing Friday night.

Kansas, Illinois and Maryland each have a winner. But as of Monday night, no one ? individual or group ? had yet stepped forward.

The New York Post reported that one potential winner in Maryland was a McDonald's employee who claimed to hold the winning ticket as an individual, but also bought tickets for several people as part of a restaurant pool. If the woman does indeed have a winning ticket, it could trigger just the latest group lottery lawsuit.

Maryland Lottery spokeswoman Carole Everett says the agency doesn't put out any information for groups, though she recommends friends and colleagues who play together come up with a system, including copying and distributing the group tickets to pool members and making a list of people who are participating.

"That way there's no confusion or mistaking it," she said.

In Illinois, where one of the three winning tickets was purchased in the small town of Red Bud, Lottery spokesman Mike Lang also recommended advanced planning to stave off disputes.

"There have been disputed wins in just about every lottery in the country," Lang said.

That's when lawyers get involved.

New Jersey attorney Rubin Sinins recently represented five construction workers who claimed a colleague, Americo Lopes, cheated them out of their share of a $38.5 million Mega Millions jackpot in 2009. The group was part of a weekly lottery pool, but Lopes claimed he bought the winning ticket for himself. A unanimous jury in New Jersey decided otherwise in March and awarded the construction workers $4 million each. Sinins said his advice to people participating in an office pool is to "use common sense."

Resolving disputed group winnings can take years.

In 2010, colleagues at a Florida country club won $16 million in the state lottery but soon faced a lawsuit from one regular pool member who wasn't at the club the day money was collected for the tickets. Jeanette French played the lottery with colleagues for nine years, though the members of the group changed over time. Seven group members claimed the winning ticket, but a lawyer for French got her claimed portion of the winnings set aside in a trust which the two sides are now fighting over.

One of French's attorneys, Miami lawyer Eric Shane, suggested that pool participants establish written rules and consider having each player sign the rules. He also suggested trying to keep pool members consistent. But his real advice?

"My true advice, honestly, would be don't do a pool," Shane said.
